Please help, Which one is correct?

I would like to ask you ladies and gentlemen abut this issue I was quarreling with my colleagues about it and we have been discussing it for a long time!!!

the issue is
which one is the correct and why

1- Ahmad couldn't start his car because he didn't know where the key was.

or

2- Ahmad couldn't start his car because he didn't know where was his key?

for me i see the first one is grammatically correct cuz the speaker is reporting the speech not aquestion ......

in question we say where was the keys but when reporting we say where the key was
