لشكسبير
(1) (أوثيلـّو)(OTHELLO) باختصار شديد هي مسرحية تراجيدية لشكسبير. يقوم البطل أوثيلّو بقتل حبيبته دوزدمونا (DESDEMONA) بسبب شكه في إخلاصها له . زرع هذا الشك في نفسه إياغو . ولما اتضح له الأمر واكتشف أنه مخطأ وأن دوزدمونا كانت مخلصة له، قام بالانتحار. وهناك اختلاف بين النقاد في كيفية ظهور أوثيلو على المسرح. فهل يظهر على أنه من أصل عربي أم زنجي أو هجين بين الأبيض والزنجي.

Doctor Faustus, a talented German scholar at Wittenburg, rails against the limits of human knowledge. He has learned everything he can learn, or so he thinks, from the conventional academic disciplines. All of these things have left him unsatisfied, so now he turns to magic. A Good Angle and an Evil Angel arrive, representing Faustus' choice between Christian conscience and the path to damnation. The former advises him to leave off this pursuit of magic, and the latter tempts him. From two fellow scholars, Valdes and Cornelius, Faustus learns the fundamentals of the black arts. He thrills at the power he will have, and the great feats he'll perform. He summons the devil Mephostophilis. They flesh out the terms of their agreement, with Mephostophilis representing Lucifer. Faustus will sell his soul, in exchange for twenty-four years of power, with Mephostophilis as servant to his every whim.

In a comic relief scene, we learn that Faustus' servant Wagner has gleaned some magic learning. He uses it to convince Robin the Clown to be his servant.

Before the time comes to sign the contract, Faustus has misgivings, but he puts them aside. Mephostophilis returns, and Faustus signs away his soul, writing with his own blood. The words "Homo fuge" ("Fly, man) appear on his arm, and Faustus is seized by fear. Mephostophilis distracts him with a dance of devils. Faustus requests a wife, a demand Mephostophilis denies, but he does give Faustus books full of knowledge.

Some time has passed. Faustus curses Mephostophilis for depriving him of heaven, although he has seen many wonders. He manages to torment Mephostophilis, he can't stomach mention of God, and the devil flees. The Good Angel and Evil Angel arrive again. The Good Angel tells him to repent, and the Evil Angel tells him to stick to his wicked ways. Lucifer, Belzebub, and Mephostophilis return, to intimidate Faustus. He is cowed by them, and agrees to speak and think no more of God. They delight him with a pageant of the Seven Deadly Sins, and then Lucifer promises to show Faustus hell. Meanwhile, Robin the Clown has gotten one of Faustus' magic books.

Faustus has explored the heavens and the earth from a chariot drawn by dragons, and is now flying to Rome, where the feast honoring St. Peter is about to be celebrated. Mephostophilis and Faustus wait for the Pope, depicted as an arrogant, decidedly unholy man. They play a series of tricks, by using magic to disguise themselves and make themselves invisible, before leaving.

The Chorus returns to tell us that Faustus returns home, where his vast knowledge of astronomy and his abilities earn him wide renown. Meanwhile, Robin the Clown has also learned magic, and uses it to impress his friend Rafe and summon Mephostophilis, who doesn't seem too happy to be called.

At the court of Charles V, Faustus performs illusions that delight the Emperor. He also humiliates a knight named Benvolio. When Benvolio and his friends try to avenge the humiliation, Faustus has his devils hurt them and cruelly transform them, so that horns grow on their heads.

Faustus swindles a Horse-courser, and when the Horse-courser returns, Faustus plays a frightening trick on him. Faustus then goes off to serve the Duke of Vanholt. Robin the Clown, his friend Dick, the Horse-courser, and a Carter all meet. They all have been swindled or hurt by Faustus' magic. They go off to the court of the Duke to settle scores with Faustus.

Faustus entertains the Duke and Duchess with petty illusions, before Robin the Clown and his band of ruffians arrives. Faustus toys with them, besting them with magic, to the delight of the Duke and Duchess.

Faustus' twenty-four years are running out. Wagner tells the audience that he thinks Faustus prepares for death. He has made his will, leaving all to Wagner. But even as death approaches, Faustus spends his days feasting and drinking with the other students. For the delight of his fellow scholars, Faustus summons a spirit to take the shape of Helen of Troy. Later, an Old Man enters, warning Faustus to repent. Faustus opts for pleasure instead, and asks Mephostophilis to bring Helen of Troy to him, to be his love and comfort during these last days. Mephostophilis readily agrees.

Later, Faustus tells his scholar friends that he is damned, and that his power came at the price of his soul. Concerned, the Scholars exit, leaving Faustus to meet his fate.

As the hour approaches, Mephostophilis taunts Faustus. Faustus blames Mephostophilis for his damnation, and the devil proudly takes credit for it. The Good and Evil Angel arrive, and the Good Angel abandons Faustus. The gates of Hell open. The Evil Angel taunts Faustus, naming the horrible tortures seen there.

The Clock strikes eleven. Faustus gives a final, frenzied monologue, regretting his choices. At midnight the devils enter. As Faustus begs God and the devil for mercy, the devils drag him away. Later, the Scholar friends find Faustus' body, torn to pieces.

Epilogue. The Chorus emphasizes that Faustus is gone, his once-great potential wasted. The Chorus warns the audience to remember his fall, and the lessons it offers.

Character List
Faustus - The protagonist. Faustus is a brilliant sixteenth-century scholar from Wittenberg, Germany, whose ambition for knowledge, wealth, and worldly might makes him willing to pay the ultimate price—his soul—to Lucifer in exchange for supernatural powers. Faustus’s initial tragic grandeur is diminished by the fact that he never seems completely sure of the decision to forfeit his soul and constantly wavers about whether or not to repent. His ambition is admirable and initially awesome, yet he ultimately lacks a certain inner strength. He is unable to embrace his dark path wholeheartedly but is also unwilling to admit his mistake.
Faustus (In-Depth Analysis)
Mephastophilis - A devil whom Faustus summons with his initial magical experiments. Mephastophilis’s motivations are ambiguous: on the one hand, his oft-expressed goal is to catch Faustus’s soul and carry it off to hell; on the other hand, he actively attempts to dissuade Faustus from making a deal with Lucifer by warning him about the horrors of hell. Mephastophilis is ultimately as tragic a figure as Faustus, with his moving, regretful accounts of what the devils have lost in their eternal separation from God and his repeated reflections on the pain that comes with damnation.
Mephastophilis (In-Depth Analysis)
Chorus - A character who stands outside the story, providing narration and commentary. The Chorus was customary in Greek tragedy.
Old Man - An enigmatic figure who appears in the final scene. The old man urges Faustus to repent and to ask God for mercy. He seems to replace the good and evil angels, who, in the first scene, try to influence Faustus’s behavior.
Good Angel - A spirit that urges Faustus to repent for his pact with Lucifer and return to God. Along with the old man and the bad angel, the good angel represents, in many ways, Faustus’s conscience and divided will between good and evil.
Evil Angel - A spirit that serves as the counterpart to the good angel and provides Faustus with reasons not to repent for sins against God. The evil angel represents the evil half of Faustus’s conscience.
Lucifer - The prince of devils, the ruler of hell, and Mephastophilis’s master.
Wagner - Faustus’s servant. Wagner uses his master’s books to learn how to summon devils and work magic.
Clown - A clown who becomes Wagner’s servant. The clown’s antics provide comic relief; he is a ridiculous character, and his absurd behavior initially contrasts with Faustus’s grandeur. As the play goes on, though, Faustus’s behavior comes to resemble that of the clown.
Robin - An ostler, or innkeeper, who, like the clown, provides a comic contrast to Faustus. Robin and his friend Rafe learn some basic conjuring, demonstrating that even the least scholarly can possess skill in magic. Marlowe includes Robin and Rafe to illustrate Faustus’s degradation as he submits to simple trickery such as theirs.
Rafe - An ostler, and a friend of Robin. Rafe appears as Dick (Robin’s friend and a clown) in B-text editions of Doctor Faustus.
Valdes and Cornelius - Two friends of Faustus, both magicians, who teach him the art of black magic.
Horse-courser - A horse-trader who buys a horse from Faustus, which vanishes after the horse-courser rides it into the water, leading him to seek revenge.
The Scholars - Faustus’s colleagues at the University of Wittenberg. Loyal to Faustus, the scholars appear at the beginning and end of the play to express dismay at the turn Faustus’s studies have taken, to marvel at his achievements, and then to hear his agonized confession of his pact with Lucifer.
The pope - The head of the Roman Catholic Church and a powerful political figure in the Europe of Faustus’s day. The pope serves as both a source of amusement for the play’s Protestant audience and a symbol of the religious faith that Faustus has rejected.
Emperor Charles V - The most powerful monarch in Europe, whose court Faustus visits.
Knight - A German nobleman at the emperor’s court. The knight is skeptical of Faustus’s power, and Faustus makes antlers sprout from his head to teach him a lesson. The knight is further developed and known as Benvolio in B-text versions of Doctor Faustus; Benvolio seeks revenge on Faustus and plans to murder him.
Bruno - A candidate for the papacy, supported by the emperor. Bruno is captured by the pope and freed by Faustus. Bruno appears only in B-text versions of Doctor Faustus.
Duke of Vanholt - A German nobleman whom Faustus visits.
Martino and Frederick - Friends of Benvolio who reluctantly join his attempt to kill Faustus. Martino and Frederick appear only in B-text

تحتوي عدة نقاط مهمة حول الحبكة plot

1- أن جاك كان في بداية القصة طيب وعلى نياته وساذج بحيث استبدل البقرة بحبات الفاصوليا ثم انتهت القصة بجعله بطلا وطنيا وشجاعا ومغامرا جريئا .

2- الانتقال المفاجئ من الفقر للغني بعد سرقته عدة أشياء من الغول العملاق .

3- النقطة المهمة وذروة الحبكة وبداية تحلل الحبكة تكمن بالمرحلة الأخيرة من سرقة القيثار السحري ونهاية الغول ...

1- Setting : refers to the time and place of the events of the story.It includes conditions,atmospheres and moods .
تشير إلى مكان وزمان القصة و تتضمن الظروف والجو العام للأحداث
Ex : can be outdoors with a concentration on landscape, indoors in kitchen.
In summer, in the past
مثال :كأن يكون الحدث في الهواء الطلق فتركز على المناظر الطبيعية أوفي المطبخ مثلا ، في الصيف ، في الماضي

2- plot :is the arrangement or sequence of events in astory .aplot is a planned,logical series of events with a beginning,middle and end . الحبكة هي ترتيب أو تسلسل الأحداث في القصة . وهي خطة تسلسل الأحداث المنطقية من البداية فالوسط فالنهاية .

It is composed of :وهو يتألف من
a- Introduction مقدمة
b- Rising actionتصاعد الأحداث
c- Climax الذروة
d- Falling actionبداية الحلول
e- A resolutionالحل النهائي وخاتمة الحدث


3-Character : refers to the main person or persons who act in a story .الشخصيات أو الأبطال في القصة هم الشخص الرئيسي في القصة أو من يشارك في صنع أحداث القصة .
a- Protagonistالبطل او الشخصية الرئيسية
b- Antagonistالشخصية الثانوية أو المكملة للشخصية الرئيسية

4-Point of view : is the angle from which a story is told .الأفكار ووجهات النظر التي تخبرنا بها القصة

a- The first person (when the story is told by one of the characters in story.use(I)الشخص الأول في القصة وهو عندما تروى القصة من جانب أحد الشخصيات وهو يستخدم في روايته: أنا

b- The second person is the reader.the reader knows as much as the author allows the limited Omniscient narrater to reveal .الشخص الثاني هو القارئ ويعرف بقدر ما يسمح له الراوي من المعرفة عن الأحداث والشخصيات

c- The third person is Omniscient narrater knows everything about all the characters.الشخص الثالث وهو الراوي العالم بكل شي في القصة وحول الشخصيات .


5-Theme : is the controlling or main idea of the literary piece . some stories may hint at the theme in the title of the story.هو الفكرة الرئيسية في القطعة الأدبية . وبعض القصص تلمح لموضوع القصة من خلال عنوانها

يجب مراجعة التعاريف المهم لعناصر كتابة القصة مع الأمثلة عليها ..

2- قراءة الترجمة لقصص هذا اليونيت – أنا لم أترجمها لأني اكتفيت بالترجمة التي وفرتها أختنا الكريمة والناشطة المثالية ..
بالمناسبة فنحن نفتقد لأختنا المثالية فقد كانت تثري النقاش بأطروحاتها وأسئلتها أسأل الله أن يوفقها في دراستها وحياتها العلمية والعملية ..

3- الرجوع إلى شرح الأخ أمرؤالقيس لهذا اليونيت وهو مثبت أعلى .. ففيه فوائد جيدة .

4- متابعة وفهم وحفظ ما يلي :
أ+- فهم معنى الكاتب الواقعي والقصة الواقعية ويجب التفريق بين القصص الواقعية والقصص الخيالية .

• Some writers provide many and often realistic .
بعض الكتاب يستخدم الواقعية في كتاباته ( كاتب واقعي)

ب+- مهم جدا أن نعرف معنى مصطلح Irony وهو من التعاريف التي تأتي في الاختبارات على شكل تعريف أو يطلب منك أن تأتي بمثال عليه :

• is a technique used to emphasise a gap between reality and appearance .
هو مصطلح ينطبق على المفارقات وهو : تقنية تستخدم للتهكم على شيئ غير مقبول لتؤكد أن هناك فجوة بين الواقع وظاهر الحال


ت – استخدام الرمز في القصة مهم جدا ويجب التركيز على معناه وفهمه جيدا ولاسيما رموز ودلالات الألوان :
• Symbolism describes the use of a concrete object to represent a concept or idea . Ex: colours
الرمزية تصف أشياء ملموسة للتعبير عن مفهوم أو فكرة . مثال ذلك الألوان
Yellow : Symbolism cowardice الأصفر يرمز للجبن
Brown : Symbolism dull البني يرمز للملل
Red : Symbolism to fire الأحمر يرمز للنار
Black : Symbolism to sadness and death . الأسود يرمز إلى الحزن والموت
Gray :اللون الرمادي وتدل على شئ سلبي
Grey : اللون الرمادي وتدل على شي ايجابي


ث+- يجب حفظ تعريف Naturalism

ج+- Naturalism : a kind of writing which depicts reality very closely and emphasizes the effects of environment and heredity on the individual .
الطبيعية هو نوع من الكتابة يصور الواقع عن كثب ويوضح آثار البيئة والوراثة على الفرد

ج – write about the setting in ( To build a fire) .
• The setting is very clear from the beginning. It is daytime on a very cold day. We find that in :
"exceedingly cold and gray"
It is 75 Fah. Below zero .
Although it is 9 o'clock in the morning there is no " hint of sun"
تركيب القصة واضح منذ البداية . انه في نهار يوم بارد جدا . نجد ذلك في :
"بارد جدا ورمادي" .
انها 75ْ فهرنهايت تحت الصفر .
بالرغم من أنها التاسعة صباحا إلا أنه لا توجد لمحة شمس .

• These realistic details . we are introduced to the idea of death .
إن فيها تفاصيل واقعية . كما أنا قدمنا لفكرة الموت .

• The atmospheric de******ion of the setting focuses on the idea of death with words such as pall, gloom and dark .the pall described is "intangible".
الجو القصصي في تركيب القصة يركز على فكرة الموت باستخدام كلمات مثل : الغطاء (الظل ) والكآبة والظلام . الظلال وصف شيئ معنوي غير مادي .

• There is death in the air and all of this is created by the details of setting .
كما ذكر في تفاصيل تركيب القصة الموت في الهواء .
انتبه ركز في setting على زمان ومكان الأحداث وعلى فكرة الموت .

• The weather plays a central role in this story . the man is unable to eat or build a fire due to the extreme cold .
الطقس يلعب دورا أساسيا ( بطل القصة ) في الأحداث حيث أن الرجل غير قادر على تناول الطعام أو إشعال النار بسبب البرد القارس.

• The temperature is repeatedly mentioned because it is the most important factor which would affect the man's survival .his life depends on how cold it is . he is unable to perform the simplest of acts , such as lighting a match due to the exceedingly cold temperatures .
تكرر ذكر درجة الحرارة مرارا لأنها العامل الأهم في بقاء الرجل . فحياته تتوقف على تكيفه مع البرد . فهو غير قادر على أداء أبسط الأعمال مثل اشعال النار بسبب درجات الحرارة الباردة جدا.

• The extreme conditions in which this man is placed reveal his true nature . we are told :
a- "He was not much given to thinking"
b- "Empty as the man's mind was of thoughts.."
The reader can conclude that this man is not very intelligent .

الظروف القاسية التي واجهت هذا الرجل تكشف عن طبيعته الحقيقية . فقد قيل لنا :
أ+- أنه لا يكلف نفسه بالتفكير كثيرا .
ب+- عقل الرجل فارغ من الأفكار .
ويمكن للقارئ أن يستنتج بأن هذا الرجل ليس ذكيا جدا .


• The man thinks that the tree is "treacherous" shows how important setting is in the story . the man even feels that it is acting against him . The man in this story doesn’t seem to be very intelligent so he may be "destined" to make all those serious mistakes .
الرجل يعتقد أن الشجرة خائنة وهذا يوضح أهمية تركيب القصة (setting) . حتى إنه شعر أنها تعمل ضده . الرجل في هذه القصة لم يبد عليه الذكاء لذا بدا وكأنه يصنع كل تلك الأخطاء الخطيرة .


• Setting in this story seems to be everything . Setting seems to have a central role in this story .
التركيب ( setting ) في هذه القصة هو كل شئ ( اللاعب الأساسي في القصة ) ويبدو أن لها دور رئيسي في القصة .



ح – write about a character in this story .

• The man can be seen as a protagonist or main character and the weather and nature can be viewed as the antagonist or enemy against which the man must struggle .
يمكن اعتبار أن الرجل هو بطل الرواية أو الشخصية الرئيسية والطقس والطبيعة يعتبران الشخصية المساعدة ( الخصم ) ضد الرجل المناضل .



خ - write about a plot in this story .
• The action of the man and nature make up the plot or events of this story .
إن ما قام به الرجل والطبيعة ( أفعالهما ودورهما في القصة ) هو حبكة القصة وأحداثها .



د - The man is not given a name in this story. why
• The man is not given a name seems to emphasise the struggle between man and nature . given a name to the man would focus our attention on him and help us to see him more personally .
الرجل لم يعط اسما في القصة لتأكيد الصراع بين الانسان والطبيعة بالعموم . فإعطاء الرجل اسما يجعلنا نركز اهتمامنا به ونرى أن الصراع شخصيا بينه وبين الطبيعة .

4- Paradox : a contradictory statement describing the very strange situation of one meeting himself on the way as he was traveling from the present to the past and back .
الظاهرة : هي وصف لوضع غريب جدا لشخص يرحل بنفسه من الحاضر إلى الماضي ثم العودة .


5- Throttled : strangled or chocked . describing what could happen to a billion unborn babies in their mothers' wombs .
الاختناق : وصف ما يمكن أن يحدث لمليار طفل الذين لم يولدوا بعد في بطون أمهاتهم .


6- Chaos : disorder , confusion . describing how the world would be like if even one mouse were accidentally killed .
الفوضى : الاضطراب والبلبلة : وصف لما سيكون عليه العالم لو انتشر القتل بالخطأ ( الصدفة )



7- Infinitesimally : infinitely ,having no boundaries describing how crushing a certain plant could have such a big effect on plants .
متناهية الصغر ( شيئ لايمكن حده) : لا حدود له


8- Expendable : not necessary ; describing the importance of one caveman who is not expendable , but important to an entire future nation .
المستهلك : غير ضروري ، وهو وصف أهمية مستقبل الأمة بأكملها أهم من أهمية رجل الكهف .

• The main part of the story takes place in the past . However this past is farmed by the present at the beginning of the story and then a different kind of present at the end of the story .

• The setting of this story , especially in terms of time , plays a crucial element in the story . in fact , it is the base upon which the events of the story are built .

The writer very cleverly relies on details of setting (past and present ) in order to highlight the meaning of the story .
في بداية القصة علمنا أن كيث المعتدل أصبح رئيسا للولايات المتحدة بالرغم من أن في آخر القصة أصبح الديكتاتور دوتشي رئيسا جديدا وهذا يشير إلى أن العالم تغير بشكل مختلف نحو المزيد من الراديكالية نتيجة لأن ايكلاس داس على فراشة في الماضي . الكاتب بشكل ذكي جدا اعتمد على تفاصيل التركيب (setting) الماضي والحاضر لتسليط الضوء على هدف القصة .


• The setting in this story is of the utmost importance . everything in this story depends on time and how the past , present and future are linked .

Knowing that Mrs. Mallard was afflicted with a heart trouble, great care was taken to break to her as gently as possible the news of her husband's death.
It was her sister Josephine who told her, in broken sentences; veiled hints that revealed in half concealing. Her husband's friend Richards was there, too, near her. It was he who had been in the newspaper office when intelligence of the railroad disaster was received, with Brently Mallard's name leading the list of "killed." He had only taken the time to assure himself of its truth by a second telegram, and had hastened to forestall any less careful, less tender friend in bearing the sad message.
She did not hear the story as many women have heard the same, with a paralyzed inability to accept its significance. She wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister's arms. When the storm of grief had spent itself she went away to her room alone. She would have no one follow her.
There stood, facing the open window, a comfortable, roomy armchair. Into this she sank, pressed down by a physical exhaustion that haunted her body and seemed to reach into her soul.
She could see in the open square before her house the tops of trees that were all aquiver with the new spring life. The delicious breath of rain was in the air. In the street below a peddler was crying his wares. The notes of a distant song which some one was singing reached her faintly, and countless sparrows were twittering in the eaves.
There were patches of blue sky showing here and there through the clouds that had met and piled one above the other in the west facing her window.
She sat with her head thrown back upon the cushion of the chair, quite motionless, except when a sob came up into her throat and shook her, as a child who has cried itself to sleep continues to sob in its dreams.
She was young, with a fair, calm face, whose lines bespoke repression and even a certain strength. But now there was a dull stare in her eyes, whose gaze was fixed away off yonder on one of those patches of blue sky. It was not a glance of reflection, but rather indicated a suspension of intelligent thought.
There was something coming to her and she was waiting for it, fearfully. What was it? She did not know; it was too subtle and elusive to name. But she felt it, creeping out of the sky, reaching toward her through the sounds, the scents, the color that filled the air.
Now her bosom rose and fell tumultuously. She was beginning to recognize this thing that was approaching to possess her, and she was striving to beat it back with her will--as powerless as her two white slender hands would have been. When she abandoned herself a little whispered word escaped her slightly parted lips. She said it over and over under hte breath: "free, free, free!" The vacant stare and the look of terror that had followed it went from her eyes. They stayed keen and bright. Her pulses beat fast, and the coursing blood warmed and relaxed every inch of her body.
She did not stop to ask if it were or were not a monstrous joy that held her. A clear and exalted perception enabled her to dismiss the suggestion as trivial. She knew that she would weep again when she saw the kind, tender hands folded in death; the face that had never looked save with love upon her, fixed and gray and dead. But she saw beyond that bitter moment a long procession of years to come that owuld belong to her absolutely. And she opened and spread her arms out to them in welcome.
There would be no one to live for during those coming years; she would live for herself. There would be no powerful will bending hers in that blind persistence with which men and women believe they ahve a right to impose a private will upon a fellow-creature.
