this is a great idea and i'll start with my definition that it is

a huge Scince that talks about languages in General

Human , Animal, Birds and every thing that has language

digging everywhere for any clue twoards the meanings here is Linguistics

Linguistics means the sounds that every language in this world has got, so it's not meant to be directed to one language only..e.g. Japanese, Chinese and so on plus The linguist Peter Ladefoged has written a lot of interesting editions about PHONETICS, have a look at it because you might find something benifitial that can help you gather at least a simple meaning for it..Linguisticsis is a very huge science through which you'll discover a lot about vowels and phonological rules like allophones and vowel qulity, air stream mechanisms and phonation types, place and manner of articulation and much much more... Well concerning linguistic , I think it is a mixture of methods of teaching , phonetics , phonology,morphology,etc and also linguistics. . On the the other hand , applied linguistics emerges from linguistics which can be defined as a spectrum of inquiry which extends from theoritical studies to classroom practice.
