Title: Cathleen ni Houlihan
Author: W. B. Yeats
Biographical Note:

W.B.Yeats (1865-1939) was one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century, and Ireland's most famed. He was an Anglo-Irishman born in Dublin of Protestant parents and raised both in County Sligo and in London. An Irish Nationalist, Yeats spearheaded the Irish Literary Renaissance movement of the early twentieth century. His works were often a commentary on the struggle for an Irish literary identity, and were even thought in some cases to have catalyzed popular revolutionary activity against British governance. Yeats' muse, the beautiful nationalist Maud Gonne, played the title role in Cathleen ni Houlihan and served as an enduring inspiration for Yeats' genius during most of his writing career.
Background:

Published in 1903, "Cathleen ni Houlihan" is a nationalistic play recalling the 1798 French landing at Killala. The play's theme speaks to the tragic valor of those who provide fervent support for Irish independence, even when victory seems unlikely and death probable. The play's references to folk songs, and Cathleen's allusion to ancient Irish language and culture clearly communicate Yeats' lifelong emphasis on the revitalization of Celtic Irish nationalism. However Cathleen ni Houlihan makes clear the playwright's support for anti-British mobilization in the name of Irish independence. Yeats later reflected on the inflammatory tendency of this play, one of his most flagrantly nationalistic works, and clearly questioned his own influence on the Easter Rising and the debate over the Anglo-Irish treaty that catalyzed the Civil War. Written in collaboration with Lady Gregory, Yeats' Cathleen ni Houlihan seems to reflect the great author during his most revolutionary time.

Précis of work:

The figure of the Old Woman is the central character in the play. Just before the closing of the curtain, she is reported by the younger son to have metamorphosed to a "young girl with the walk of a queen". In light of the woman's ability to seduce the older son Michael for Ireland's cause, Cathleen's metamorphosis symbolizes the potential rejuvenation of the island's people, and the timeless nature of their fight. A young Irishman's courageous duty to the goal of independence for his homeland (particularly resonant in the West) is stressed, undermining the importance of family, love and success in exchange for heroism and imminent defeat. Hopeful preparations on the eve of Michael's wedding are stopped short by Cathleen's arrival and subsequent persuasion, and it becomes clear to the audience that optimism about Michael's material success or long life will be fruitless. The cause, tragic as its ends may be, is the sole concern of those who will lead Ireland from British domination.
