كثيراً ما يسأل المتعلمين عن استخدامات التصريف الثالث أو ما يقال عنه past participle فما هي استخداماته يا ترى؟ للتصريف الثالث أربعة استخدامات
1. يستخدم مع الأزمنة التامة perfect tenses والتي تكون في العادة مسبوقة بـِ has - have - had إلخ أمثلة:
I have written a letter
She has made a cup of coffee
They had arrived after sunset
2. يستخدم أيضاً مع صيغة المبني للمجهول passive voice ويكون قبله is - am - are - was were - been - be أمثلة:
The door was closed
The letters were sent
Dates are grown in Saudi Arabia
The shoes has been repaired
3. يستخدم كصفة participle adjective أمثلة:
I am pleased to write you these lines
They replaced the broken window
4. بالنسبة للاستخدام الرابع فيعرفه المتقدمين في اللغة ويسمى dangling modifier أو participial phrase أمثلة:
Based on the results of the tests, we changed our plan
Discouraged by his poor performance, Alan dropped out the race
