sometimes we use the passive voice because we don't know or cannot express who or what performed the action
another answer
Sometimes we use the Passive because we don't know who has done the action or because we don't want or need to say who did it

we usually use pasive for these reasons
1- when we don't know the subject
2- when we are more interested in the object and what happen /ed to it than the subject itself
3 - when the subject is known and there is no need to mention it in the sentence
4- when we cover or speak about events or accidents as journalistic work
examples:-
1- the car was stolen last night.
2- my new book has been taken away.
3- the lesson was explained in detail and we all understood it.
4- hundreds of people were killed in egypt last month.
