Step One

Translation is a complex process that requires an immense amount of talent, skill, experience and training. Knowing another language is simply not good enough. Translation is the “gleaning of meaning”, that is, the translator must first be able to understand and assimilate the information contained in the source text and, then, “reproduce” such information within the confines of the target language (i.e., he/she must adhere to the rules of grammar, syntax, usage and style of the target language). In other words, the translation must have a “natural ring” to it and must read like an original text, rather than a translation.

Step Two

This feat can only be achieved by native speakers of the target language who also have a very good and thorough command of the source language (you will find it impossible to convey every nuance of the source text if you have not fully mastered the source language). Translation is not, and cannot be, the simple replacement of words in one language with words in another. What is translated, rather, is meaning and information—as a result, machine translation does not work. Translation is an intuitive process, and intuition is something that no computer can ever be programmed to simulate.

Given the complexity of translation, it is also clear that professional translators can only work in a limited number of language pairs, because each language pair is like a “musical instrument” that needs to be practised every day. That takes a lot of time and resources, and so professionals limit themselves to no more than 3 or 4 language pairs. Yes, you will encounter “translators” that claim to be able to translate from five, six or more languages into English, but that’s not true. With each additional pair, they take away valuable time and resources they would need to maintain a professional level in the other language pairs they offer. Personally, I would give such “translators” a wide berth.

Step Three

A university program in translation or any good certificate program will ensure that the translator is fully at home in his/her working languages and that he/she has learned how to navigate various disciplines. For my degree, I had to take specialized courses in law, business, science, medicine and other disciplines by auditing classes offered at such departments (in some cases, we even had to take the same examinations as students enrolled in such courses). In order to translate a document correctly, you must first understand the subject matter.

You don’t have to be a plumber or a brain surgeon to understand documents about plumbing or brain surgery. It is therefore a misconception to say that the best translator for an engineering text, for example, is an engineer who also “happens” to translate on the side. As a matter of fact, a lot of engineers are not really known for their linguistic prowess (just look at technical manuals or user instructions), so translations are best left to professional linguists who also understand the subject matter well enough to convey the information in the target language.

As you can see from all this, a good translation cannot be produced “overnight”. In fact, writing a thousand words (on any subject matter) takes less time than translating those same one thousand words. This is important to consider when shopping around for a translator. Do not wait until the “11th hour” to assign your project to a translator. On average, allow for up to 2,000 words per business day.

Also, provide your translator with as much information as you can: target audience, glossaries, copies of previous translations of similar documents, etc. Most companies use “in-house jargon” that an outsider, such as the translator, cannot possibly know or understand. So, please, always provide glossaries of internal terminology, abbreviations, acronyms, codes, etc. This will not only facilitate the translator’s work, but also ensure that your documents are translated properly and professionally.
