'' Even'' has various meanings in English language. Note some examples below.

The picture on that wall is not even. It is slanting towards the right side.

The soccer in the game was even at 2-2( Note:idiom= the soccer is '' even steven'')

The two opponents are evenly matched. One is as strong and skilled as the other.

She divided the remaining portion of the cake evenly between her son and daughter, they each got the same amount.

He is even-handed in his treatment of his employees; he treats everyone fairly.

The number 2,4,6 ,8,10, etc., are even numbers' the numbers 1,3, 5, etc., are odd numbers.

He owed me $10, but paid me back last night; now, we are even( he does not owe me anything)

When he killed my brother, I tried to kill his brother in order to get even. ( to get even = to get revenge).

He is an even-tempered person; he does not easily get angry.

However the problem students have with the word is when it is used as an intensifier to make a situation or condition stronger. Note the examples below.

When he makes up his mind, nobody can change it, not even his wife( who is the person who has the greatest influence on him)

We expected a very large enrollment at our English center this term, but the number was even higher than we had expected. ( Note that we were expecting a bout 2,000 students- which is a very large number- but 2,400 registered)

Even though he worked steadily without any rest for 48 straight hours, he was unable to finish the work. ( this makes the idea of '' Although'' even stronger. Making the contrast between the '' hard work'' and the '' failure'' even greater. The tense here are pas simple and the time is in the past in both clause. It means that he worked very hard, but he was not successful.

Even if he is studying in American center, he is unable to speak a word.( Again, this shows strong contrast( stronger than just '' although'' . The time here is present in both the clause. He is studying in American center with American teachers, he would not be able to speak a word.

Even if he had worked steadily without any rest for 48 hours, he would not have been able to finish the work. ( this is a type 3 conditional- past time- showing the idea of '' contrary to fact'' in the past; it means that he did not work hard steadily for 48 hours, but that does not matter because working that hard would still have the result of unfinished work.

Even if he were studying at American center, he would not be able to speak a word.( this is a type 2 conditional-present or future time- showing again, he is not studying at the American center, that he can't speak English and that he is- probably- such a bad language learner that even studying In American center with native teachers could not help him to be able to speak English

Even is he pass the exam ( tomorrow), he will fail the course.( this is a type 1 conditional- present or future time- showing that it is possible that he will pass the exam tomorrow, but this is will not help him to pass the course; he will fail the course regardless of how he does on the exam.
