l would say, "When l started school at the age of 7, there were 20 students in my class"

The two sentences contain some of the common mistakes most language learners make
Here they are

ln school , there are school children or
or just children (pupils is more formal

When I started school aged seven , there were 20 school children in my class

The class is the group of people learning . The place where you
learn is the classroom

There are some nice pictures in my classroom..

.

you are right about "class" and "classroom" but wrong about "student" and "school children"l

I don't like to go against your point of view...but you are wrong! Students can be any age, not just over 16. you don't need to be at a university to be considered a student

A student is simply any person who is engaged in learning. This can be a 5 year old kindergarten student, or a 40 year old college/university student. It can also be a person learning a trade, such as an apprentice. Pupil, and schoolboy/girl/child, are synonyms for student. They have similar meanings

Its better to say" there were 20 students in my class

school children" should really only be used if you are looking at a group of kids and commenting on their age or what they are doing. For example: "I was driving to work when a group of
school children jumped out in the road

I hope that helped

thanks again

I believe this is your opinion because you think in Arabic :smile (92):and apply it to English and this is a misconception . English is totally different . In grammar and word usage , there is no place
for what we think - there are rulers set by the native speakers language experts to be understood and followed . The example and the explanations I quote were written by a native speaker language teacher:smile2 (1):

This is a common mistake .
The learners in different stages have different names
Here is another explanation which I hope you read it carefully . It explains everything.

student, schoolchild, pupil

In British English,
a student usually means someone who has finished school and is studying at university

• We met when we were students.
• student accommodation
Children who go to school can be called schoolchildren, schoolboys or schoolgirls

My sentence was about Age Seven = school children
When I started school aged seven , there were 20 school children in my class

• A group of schoolchildren got on the bus.
The children at a particular school can be called its pupils
• Pupils at the school were sent home early.

In American English
student is the usual word for anyone who is studying at school or college.
GRAMMAR
To say that someone is studying at a particular university, use at
• She's a student at York University.
A student of literature, law etc studies that subject, but it is more usual to say 'a literature/law student'.
