Hi everyone>>

I was wondering about the appropriate place to get advice and eventually decided that Saudi English could be the suitable one. I am a postgraduate student and I need advice from specialists and knowledgeable people. One of the modules that I am undertaking it now in the master degree is (technology enhanced language learning), and how the technology may be used to support language learning. I am supposed to choose either creating a simple web page, blog, social networking, wikis, broadcast and so on. The thing is I have to plan, create, present, evaluates and report on a technology enhanced language learning activity of my own choice. For example, if I design a blog on teaching some grammatical rules, tenses, or anything which is related to learning the English language. I need an audience, students, if my chosen topic relating to students, or teachers, if my topic will relate to them. I really need your advice especially from teachers who have experience and know what may be useful for me and for the students and small regarding choosing the topic, and who is better to choose as participants because I need to stay with them at least one month and two weeks or so, and I have to write a weekly report on their progress and what they have done. I hope to hear from you as soon as possible.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation and you are most welcome if you have any suggestions evening if you consider the useless.
Asslamo alikom

Hi postgrd student; i have an idea which i always thought would be very useful for people trying to learn a foreign language; some one should create an audio program specifically for building vocabulary; once people learn the basics of grammar in a foreign language then they really need to just build up their knowledge of vocabulary and idioms in order to become more fluent.

also, since most of us are very busy, we don't have time to sit down and read a book, so it would be much easier for people to learn from a program that is entirely audio-based. people naturally learn language by hearing rather than reading; people have been learning languages for thousands of years by hearing, long before writing was even invented.

there are already some audio-based vocabulary programs out there, but here is what i was thinking, which would be an improvement over existing programs: the program should be based on speaking simple sentences in one language and then speaking the translation in another language, but the important part is that the sentences should be ones which most listeners already know the substance of. for example:

The President lives in the White House.
الريس يسكن في البيت الابيض.

this sentence would be more useful than a similar sentence like
The teacher lives in the red house.

A sentence which has a meaning that people already know will help the learners understand unknown words and help them remember words that they learn. If you made an audio CD with many such pairs of sentences, a person could just listen to it and learn many new vocabulary words easily. this type of method could also be used for idioms, as these are some of the hardest things for non-native speakers to learn. the CD could be used equally well by arabic speakers trying to learn english or english speakers trying to learn arabic. Could be a money-making opportunity. :-)

Hi pizza driver,
thank you so much for ur cooperation. the thing that I have to spend one month and two weeks with my students in order to write a weekly report. So, I am thinking if I give them an activity each week and let them discuss it with each others with individual responses. Also, I am thinking about Collocations and how to enhance and develope them. I need more suggestions if you have because I do not know especially at this stage how to make a programme, besides the time does not help me enough. I intended to have a blog or a forum with inserting some audio and visual attachments. What do u think?

Hello again postgrad,
I'm not sure if response #6 was to me but i will answer; i don't actually have any qualifications, except that i have studied a lot of foreign languages (i have 2 college degrees but they do not really apply to this subject (engineering and education)) :-)

I am actually an american who has been studying arabic for a while, and as i mentioned, once a person learns the basic grammar of a foreign language, they really need to just increase their vocabulary to become more proficient. i have always been looking for an easy way to build vocabulary and learn idioms, that doesn't require me to sit down and read a book for several hours.

i think that a method such as what i mentioned before is an effective way to build vocabulary, because if the words are presented in simple sentences with subjects/meanings that people are already familiar with, it makes it easier to understand and remember the words. any simple sentences would probably serve the purpose as well, as long as they are spoken slowly and clearly, and followed by a translation. but specifically, i was thinking of sentences like this:

many arab countries are located in or near deserts.
deserts are very hot and often sandy.
the temperature can reach 120 degrees during the day.
america is located between the atlantic and pacific oceans.
The United States consists of 50 states.

i don't know if i am making my idea clear, but what i was thinking was to use sentences which contain some meaning that people already know, so it would help them understand and remember the foreign words. anyway, i definitely think that it would be very useful to have some kind of all-audio vocabulary learning program, because most people do not have time to spend hours studying a book. well, i wish you good luck on your project; if i can help you at all, let me know. i am not an expert on anything, but i do speak english pretty well, :-) so i could provide advice on that.
talk to you later,
Pizza

hmmm; well, i wrote that other response before i read your new reply.... as far as a blog or something goes, you could have students translate some stories from the news or create their own news stories in english, based on current events, and post them on your blog. then you could have them correct each other's translations :-) with your help. or maybe you could have them create some of their own learning tools, which you could include in your report. not sure what you meant about developing collocations... give me some more details. i will have to think a little more, since i know more about your project. i would say this "Think outside the box" as we say in america; try something different and creative. well, i must get some sleep now; i will check back later. good luck.

Hi Pizza,
Thank u soo much for ur golden advice and guidelines. But I am still concern about the topic, if I choose your topic, how can I plan activities with students for 5 weeks, what do u think?
and I mean with collocation, you know some English words comes together and as foreign language learners, we missuse them and using them wrongly, for example, ( high price), not a big price and so on.
I will come back with many qs

Hi Pizza,
Could u please suggest to me what can I do with the students during 5 weeks, I really need a foundation to build my thoughts on it and have a start.
