The reading section of the TOEFL test measures your ability to recognize a proper paraphrase. Paraphrasing is rewording a sentence or a passage with your own expressions without changing the meaning or context. Knowing how to paraphrase is very important for the integrated tasks in the writing section and the speaking section of the TOEFL test. For example, if you hear a conversation, you are not able to memorize it exactly, but you may be able to paraphrase, or convey the basic ideas of the conversation. Practice your ability to paraphrase after reading your assignments. Ask someone to listen and evaluate.
Tip #2 - Know Your Pronouns!
Pronouns take the place of real nouns. Words like he, him, she, her, they, them, etc. are pronouns. A pronoun can replace first names like Ed or Tony, or other nouns. For TOEFL success, master pronoun usage by reading through some passages and identifying all the pronouns. Then connect each pronoun with the actual noun it replaces.

To score high on the TOEFL, you need a big vocabulary. To expand your English vocabulary, identify unfamiliar words in a passage and try to guess their meanings from the surrounding sentences.
