Ballad Of The Landlord

Ballad of the Landlord is about an African American tenant whose apartment is falling apart and doesn't want to pay the rent until the landlord fixes the problems. At the end of the poem, the landlord calls the police and they take him away to jail for refusing to pay the rent

The speaker in this poem is a poor African American tenant. He is angry that the landlord won't fix anything yet still wants him to pay the rent. I would characterize the speaker as someone who doesn't want to be cheated out of his money and wants to be treated fairly. The speaker reveals his true feelings about paying the rent in stanza four where it says, "Ten Bucks you say is due? Well, that's Ten Bucks more'n I'll pay you, will you fix this house up new."

The language used in this poem is fairly easy to understand. The word "eviction" means to force out by legal process. This word contributes the most to the poem, because it makes the reader understand that the landlord is
serious, and the disagreement isn't

This poem describes a confrontation between a black tenant, living probably in the ghetto of a big-city, USA, and his landlord. The tenant reminds the landlord of his maintenance problems, a leaky roof and broken steps. The landlord ignores the tenant's problems and tells him his ten-dollar rent is due. This response angers the tenant, so he refuses to pay until the landlord fixes the house. Immediately, the landlord threatens to evict him, turn off the heat, and throw all his furniture into the street, if he doesn't pay the rent. Feeling that one threat deserves another, the tenant also threatens the landlord with a punch to the lips to shut him up. The landlord calls the police because of the tenant's threat. The media distorts this incident and portrays the poor tenant (and not the landlord) as the aggressor. The tenant is arrested and thrown to jail, without bail, for 90 days

The landlord threatens to evict the

tenant, and the tenant threatens to punch the landlord. Upon this threat the landlord calls the police, and they throw the tenant into jail.

Explication Analysis of Langston Hughes “Ballad of the Landlord
”

In “Ballad of the Landlord,” Langston Hughes begins with the traditional ballad form and then chooses to morph the form so as to allow a contemporary urban setting to set the tone of the poem. Hughes decided to use this unorthodox form in hopes of allowing the audience to relate to a current and crushing social problem between classes in the 1930’s. Additionally, Langston has abandoned the typical structure of traditional form for a contemporary form that gives further insight into the problems that African-Americans face in the inner city. The poem structure has nine ballad stanzas that tell of disagreement and jail. In the opening five stanzas, the first-person narrator/tenant is talking to and complaining about a landlord who has not done the repairs that would justify paying the rent on his house. In the remaining four stanzas, readers are told of the terrible consequences of the narrator’s protest
