Compound Words

Description:

A compound word is when two words are joined together to create one word/term, such as “news” and “stand” for “newsstand.” Such combinations need not only create one word however. Words like “after all,” “cash flow,” and “fact sheet” are also compound words, as their meanings are not separate.

Uses:

Compound words are often used in the English language, but spelling problems arise when a word that should be hyphenated isn’t or when a term that should be two words spaced, is written as a single/hyphenated word. As with prepositions, the most efficient way to ensure proper use is to familiarize oneself with the most commonly used words/terms.

Misuse: Compound words can be adjectives, adverbs, or nouns and are written as 1) solid compounds, 2) hyphenated compounds, and 3) spaced words.

The following 10 are common solid compounds:

after thought = afterthought
any time = anytime
any where = anywhere
can not = cannot
kick off = kickoff
month long = monthlong
on line = online
proof read = proofread
story teller = storyteller
work place = workplace

The following 10 are common hyphenated compounds:

check in = check-in
close up = close-up
fact finding = fact-finding
front runner = front-runner
hand picked = hand-picked
know how = know-how
second rate = second-rate
start up = start-up
voice over = voice-over
year end = year-end

blend is a word formed from parts of two or more other words. These parts are sometimes, but not always, morphemes
Blends deal with the action of abridging and then combining various lexemes to form a new word. However, the process of defining which words are true blends and which are not is more complicated. The difficulty comes in determining which parts of a new word are "recoverable" (its root can be distinguished).[1]

There are many types of blends, based on how they are formed. Algeo, a linguist, proposed dividing blends into three groups[1] :

Phonemic Overlap: a syllable or part of a syllable is shared between two words
Clipping: the shortening of two words and then compounding them
Phonemic Overlap and Clipping: shortening of two words to a shared syllable and then compounding
However, classification of types of blends is not standard among all linguists.

The beginning of one word is added to the end of the other (see portmanteau). For example, brunch is a blend of breakfast and lunch.
simultaneous (5) + broadcast (2) → simulcast (3, exception)

The beginnings of two words are combined. For example, cyborg is a blend of cybernetic and organism.
Two words are blended around a common sequence of sounds. For example, the word Californication, from a song by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, is a blend of California and fornication, and the word motel is a blend of motor and hotel
Multiple sounds from two component words are blended, while mostly preserving the sounds' order. Poet Lewis Carroll was well known for these kinds of blends.
