American Culture Vs. Saudi Culture
All cultures are not alike depending on the country's customs and traditions and because of the huge differences between oriental and occidental cultures ,I have chose to compare and contrast between the American culture and the Saudi culture ,to emphasize how the two cultures can have common things between them and differ.
There are lot's of aspects where the American culture differs from the Saudi culture .I will classify these aspects into five categories ,meeting someone for the first time, eating habits ,addressing people ,eating out, smoking .
Meeting someone for the first time
In America ,it is customary to shake hands for men and women. Hugs are only exchanged between close friends .Kissing is not common. Unlike meeting someone in Saudi Arabia ,it is customary to exchange kisses and shake hands.
Eating habits
Americans usually eat with forks and knives accept hamburgers and French fries and pizza are commonly eaten by hands.However,Saudis eat with their hands without using utensils .cakes and ice creams are usually eaten by using utensils such as, spoons ,forks. There is a traditional meal in Saudi Arabia which is eaten by hands it is called Kabsa .Kabsa is usually made of rice and oriental spices and chicken or meat .
Addressing people
Americans normally address everyone they meet in a social or business setting by their first name.However,you should address your college professors by their title and last name. In contrast, it is very important to address your teachers by their titles and their first names in Saudi Arabia to show respect. It is also very significant to say 'May I please speak to…..'when calling on the phone to show politeness.
Americans normally answer the telephone by simply saying hello. If you are calling a business you should ask for the person you are looking for politely:" May I speak with…"
Eating out
All restaurants in America accept cash for payment also accept credit cards. Few restaurants accept ATM cards. similarly in Saudi Arabia it is very common to pay cash for restaurants because most restaurants prefer cash rather than checks or credit cards. Many restaurants also do not accept ATM cards.
Smoking
Smoking is not common in America as in many other countries. Generally ,Americans smoke less than Europeans and much less than Asians. It is a practice that it is becoming less and less acceptable. Smoking is prohibited in public places .The exceptions are night clubs ,bars, and some restaurants. The legal smoking age is 18.If you look young and you want to buy cigarettes the clerk is required by law to ask you for proof of legal age. Similarly in Saudi Arabia smoking is an undesirable habit it is not socially acceptable .Most parents prohibit their children from smoking but there is no legal age for smoking .Cigarettes are sold in stores regardless of the age of the smoker.
In summary ,cultures differ from each other. We can see now how two cultures can vary and resemble.
