Ahmad Shawqi is the only poet in the Arab literary tradition who was granted the title of " Amir al- Sho’araa’, literally trhe ‘Prince of Poets (1927).
His twofold contribution to the arab literary tradition residesnot only in a sizable body of poems published in an anthology known as " Sawqiyyat’' , but also in his pioneering introduction of poetic drama into the Arabic literary tradition.
Commenting on Shawqi’s use of rhymed verse in drama for the first time, critic Taher at-Tanahi (1967) popints out that Shawqi did for Arabic literature what Shakespeare had done for English literature.

Shawqi was born in Cairo, in 1870, during the regn of Khedive Ismail in Egypt . After completing his high school education, he joined the Department of Translation of the School of Law ., His poetic genius , which had revealed itself early on, won him a scholarship to France , where he resumed his study of law at the Universities of Montpellier and Paris , respectively. It was during his stay in France that he was heavily influenced by French drama , particularly the plays of Moliere and Racine.

back home , he was appointed at the court of Khedive Abbas. Upon the outbreak of World War I, the Khedive was dethroned and Shawqi himsellf was exiled to Spain. . When the war was over , he returned to Egypt where he became a member of the Parliament. He died in 1932.

Shawqi wrote seven plays: six tragedies and one comedy. Three out of the six are historical plays with patriotic themes: The Death of Cleopatra, Qambeez and Ali Bey Al-Kabeer.

The other three plays are more embedded in the Arab Islamic background: namely, Majnun Laila, Antara and The Princess of Andalusia.

    William Shakespeare
was an English poet and playwright, now widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's preeminent dramatist.[1][2] He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon" (or simply "The Bard"). His surviving works consist of 38 plays,[b] 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and several other poems. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.[3]

Shakespeare was born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon. At the age of 18 he married Anne Hathaway, who bore him three children: Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith. Between 1585 and 1592 he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part-owner of the playing company the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men. He appears to have retired to Stratford around 1613, where he died three years later. Few records of Shakespeare's private life survive, and there has been considerable speculation about such matters as his sexuality, religious beliefs, and whether the works attributed to him were written by others.[4]

Shakespeare produced most of his known work between 1590 and 1613. His early plays were mainly comedies and histories, genres he raised to the peak of sophistication and artistry by the end of the sixteenth century. Next he wrote mainly tragedies until about 1608, producing plays, such as Hamlet, King Lear, and Macbeth, considered some of the finest in the English language. In his last phase, he wrote tragicomedies and collaborated with other playwrights. Many of his plays were published in editions of varying quality and accuracy during his lifetime, and in 1623, two of his former theatrical colleagues published the First Folio, a collected edition of his dramatic works that included all but two of the plays now recognised as Shakespeare's.

Shakespeare was a respected poet and playwright in his own day, but his reputation did not rise to its present heights until the nineteenth century. The Romantics, in particular, acclaimed Shakespeare's genius, and the Victorians hero-worshipped Shakespeare with a reverence that George Bernard Shaw called "bardolatry".[5] In the twentieth century, his work was repeatedly adopted and rediscovered by new movements in scholarship and performance. His plays remain highly popular today and are consistently performed and reinterpreted in diverse cultural and political contexts throughout the world

William Shakespeare (1564-1616) is considered by many to be one of the finest playwrights in history. The influence of his work extends to the modern day, and his stories are often reworked into modern plots. It is not that his plots were particularly unique, rather that his language and characters are fascinating. Despite our respect of what many term the “master” of English Literature, there is only sketchy biographical information regarding Shakespeare. As well, there is dispute about the authorship of several of his plays, and whether some of the plays may have been collaborative.

Most information about the life of Shakespeare is taken from church records. We know, for example, that he was born in 1564, and most date his birthday as April 23. It is certain that Shakespeare was baptized on April 26. The death of Shakespeare is often dated as April 23, 1616, but this may as well be inaccurate. He probably attended a local school, and was married to Anne Hathaway, with whom he had three children.

When Shakespeare was about 20, he left his wife and children and went to London where he worked as an actor and playwright. He also wrote a number of sonnets, and several book length poems in around 1592, when the spread of plague closed down theaters for a few years. He is noted for both “Venus and Adonis” and “The Rape of Lucrece.” Most of his plays were not published, but were rather written down as tracts so the actors could memorize lines. So publication of the plays today is based on collected folios, and critics differ on when each play was published.
