How To Memorize Things Quicker Than Other People


Write Everything Down

Before you start trying to recall everything from memory, write and re-write the information. This will help you become more familiar with what you’re trying to memorize. Doing this while listening to your tape recorder can also help you retain a lot of the data. This is most useful for experiential learners.

: Section your notes.

Now that you have everything written down in one set of notes, separate them into sections. This is ideal for visual learners, especially if you use color coding to differentiate between subjects. This will help you break everything down and start compartmentalizing the information being recorded in your brain.

Get support to get motivated

If you are not getting enough encouragement from your family or friends, that shouldn’t discourage you because it doesn’t mean that no one cares.

Your teacher, for example, surely cares whether or not you do your homework and study well. Teachers are always there to support their students, because their success as educators depends on the achievements of the class.

If you feel like you don’t get enough support in your home or from your friends, you can join an education forum and find the motivation you need. Many people will cheer for you if you are brave enough to cheer for yourself.

Stay hydrated

Water allows many of the chemical reactions in our bodies to take place and therefore, the speed at which our brains can work and process all those notes will be affected if we become dehydrated . The NHS recommends we aim to drink around 1.2 litres of fluid a day - water being the liquid of choice to keep your body functioning on top form.

Get enough sleep

While you want heaps of energy during the day, come bedtime ensure your body and mind are ready to rest. Lack of sleep will make it impossible to understand the detailed theory of X Factor let alone anything else, and you'll be much more likely to reach for a sugary fix to get you through the learning lulls.
Warm milk and herbal teas before bed have a sedative effect, while a carb-rich snack an hour or so before you head upstairs will clear the way for sleep-inducing amino acids to reach the brain. .

Check past exam papers

Get your hands on any old exam papers from the subject and familiarise yourself
with the structure and format. Your teacher or lecturer should be able to let you
know where you can get your hands on some.
Your school or university library might have past exams on file, too.
Practise answering the questions within the specified time
limits
and check your answers against your notes to make
sure you’ve got them right.

Stick to what you already know when studying
the night before an exam.
You’ll only make yourself nervous if you try to learn new information.

A great tip for any exam is to break the questions down to make sure you really understand what you’re being asked.
If you don’t answer the question properly you won’t get
full marks for it.
Look for the key parts in the question and these will give you clues on how to answer it. For example,

and revision",
:you can split this question into four parts

Explain - give reasons to show how or why something
is the way it is
The difference - what are the distinguishing factors

How to Skim and Scan

Many students find the reading skills of skimming
and scanning confusing and at times difficult
It is easy to understand why. The two words sound very similar and for some reason, people always think that skimming is scanning and scanning is skimming.
Not to worry! This blog is not only going to explain what skimming and scanning is, where and why to use
it but will also explain how to do it.

?What is skimming

To skim a text is to read for general meaning. That means,
you quickly read over the text. You do not read every single word of the text. Focus on reading headings
and subheadings. Then, read the first and last sentence of all the paragraphs. If it is a long text,
take the time to read the introduction and conclusion and “skim” the rest of the paragraphs
using the way described above.

?What is scanning

Scanning is not what most students think.
It does not involve an actual computer scanner.

You have probably done it a million times and did not even realise you were doing it.
When you look up the time for a movie,
a departure gate at the airport or when
you are trying to find some specific piece of information like a date, a name of a person or place- when you do these things, you are scanning. Scanning is to look for information,
just like skimming but unlike the latter
it is where you find a specific pieces of information.

?Why skimming and scanning is important

When given a text that you have not read before or do not know much about,
you quickly need to become familiar with it,
especially when you are in exams like
IELTS, FCE or CAE where time management is everything. The easiest way and most effective way
to become familiar is to skim and to scan.


One Way to Skim a Text
Step 1: Preview words and the text itself
Step 2: Read the introduction paragraph carefully and try to predict some of the ideas and arguments of the text
Step 3: Read the first two sentences of each paragraph as well as the concluding sentence.
The key ideas of the paragraphs are outlined there.
Step 4: Do not stop for unfamiliar words. Keep your eyes moving. You goal is to get a general understanding
of the text NOT specific understanding
of some words.
Step 5: Read the concluding paragraph

Stay Positive- Have the students practice saying positive affirmations such as, I will pass the test. Have them visualize
performing well on the test.
Work Hard- Make sure you read everything and show your work.
Examine the Questions- Questions should be read twice. Read over ALL the answer choices.
Eliminate Wrong Answers- There are usually one or two answers that can be eliminated. Teach students to cross those out.
Good test takers should be able to narrow down
the choices to two answers at least.
Take All the Time Given- Never close your test booklet. Keep working until time is called.
Make sure you practice these steps long before test day.
