    John Donne
    The Computation
    Poem lyrics of The Computation by John Donne.
    For the first twenty years since yesterday
    I scarce believed thou couldst be gone away;
    For forty more I fed on favors past,
    And forty on hopes that thou wouldst they might last.
    Tears drowned one hundred, and sighs blew out two,
    A thousand, I did neither think nor do,
    Or not divide, all being one thought of you,
    Or in a thousand more forgot that too.
    Yet call not this long life, but think that I
    Am, by being dead, immortal. Can ghosts die?

    In this poem, the speaker counts the years which separated him for his beloved. Actually, they have been separated only for a day, ''since yesterday''. The total number of years. He feels that they have been separated in two thousands and four hundreds.

    In this poem, we have two kinds of language: figurative language (2400 years) and literal language (day, yesterday). It is an overstatement to show how much he misses his beloved. And he wants to emphasize that he is very sad because his beloved left him.

    This poem is rich of metaphor.
    1. in the third line, we have Metaphor when he likens the memory of the past to the food.
    2. also, in the fourth line, he likens the hopes of the future to the food.
    3. in the fifth line, we have metaphor and personification. He likens the tears to the sea, and likens the years to a person who drowned in the sea.
    4. also he likens sighs to wind which is blowing.
    5. There is a rhetorical question in the last line to attract the attention of the reader and to emphasize what he wants to say.
    6. Also, in the last line, we find new kind of figure of speech which is hyperbole. The word "ghost" refers to the poet. He wants to emphasize that if he dies, he will not forget her. His ghost will not die and it remains to remember her. The meaning is that the ghosts of beloveds not die even the die.

    القصيدة الثانية

    "Richard Cory"
    Whenever Richard Cory went down town,
    We people on the pavement looked at him:
    He was a gentleman from head to crown,
    Clean favored, and imperially slim.

    And he was always quietly arrayed,
    And he was always human when he talked;
    But he still fluttered pulses when he said,
    "Good-morning," and he glittered when he walked.
    And he was rich--yes, richer than a king--
    and admirably schooled in every grace:
    In fine, we thought that he was everything
    To make us wish that we were in his place.
    So on we worked, and waited for the light,
    And went without the meat, and cursed the bread;
    And Richard Cory, one calm summer night,
    Went home and put a bullet through his head.

    This poem is a descriptive poem on little incident. We have description of Cory by common people who are simple, uneducated and poor.

    In the first stanza, the poor people describe Richard Cory by physical description. They say that he is a gentleman, clean ''good looking'', handsome, slim and well dressed. Also, they describe him by psychological description. They say that he is courteous to people, well educated. The poet uses these words because he describes him as a royal and very great person. This description makes the readers expect that Cory is very happy. But in his side he is not happy and he commits suicide.

    In the last stanza, we have the word ''light'' which refers to hope. These people hope to be happy in the future. Also, in this stanza, we have irony of situation when Richard Cory commits suicide.

    The meaning of this poem:
    This poem means that happiness doesn’t com from wealth, it comes from within one's self.
