Discuss characteristics of serious drama?
In a figurative sense, a serious drama is a tragedy , any event with a sad and unfortunate outcome, but the term also applies specifically in Western culture to a form of drama characterized by seriousness and dignity and involving a great person whose downfall is caused by a character flaw or conflict with a higher power (e.g. the law, the gods, fate, or society). However, the classical definition of tragedy used by Aristotle and understood in ancient Greek drama is merely a story with a reversal of fortune (Peripeteia): from bad to good, as in the Eumenides or from good to bad, as in Oedipus Rex. Old-fashioned English spellings such as tragoedy (cf. Latin tragoedia) and tragedie (cf. French tragédie) occur in early-modern and earlier works
