How do you teach vocabulary

Vocabulary is a collective noun refering to words.It is sometimes said that students are intrested in learning as many vocabulary items as the can.
They compete on knowing unfamiliiar words . Many Ss are reported to words from dictionaries

For teaching and learning purposes vocabulary is divided in two sorts:

A-passive vocabulary ::

It include words that Ss need to undrestand when the uncounter them during reading or listening, it means when they listen to others saying them or when they come across them during reading.This sort of vocabulary called ((Receptive Vocabulary ))

B- Active vocabulary ::

It refers to those words that Ss need not only to undrestand an oral or written message but also to send an oral or written message. Ss use active vocabulary items to produce messages ...This sort of vocabulary called ((Productive vocabulary ))

There are some techniques for teaching a new vocabulary items ::

1 - using visual aids :: ( a ) _Real objects

( b )_Pictures .

( c ) _Blackboard drawing .

( d ) _Wall charts and pictures card .

2- Using verbal context : should be as phrase ,a sentence or number of sentences

( a ) _ Synonyms : words of the same meaning

( b ) _ Antonyms : words that have opposite meaning

3- Using translation : Translation is not recommended because it is the shortest way for presenting the meaning . The problem is that Ss know the meaning but he doesnt know
how to use it in a sentence....Trnaslation can be used when teacher teach abstract words
then Arabic equivalent followed by an example and then the Ss repeat the examples not the
meaning in Arabic

I have here some steps for teaching a new vocabulary items:::

1_ T says the words 3 times while Ss listen .

2_ T presents the meaning .

3_ Ss repeat after teacher in chorus ,in groups ,and individually .

4_ T uses the word in a sentence .

5_ Ss repeat the sntences individually .

6_ T writes the word on the bb and reads it .

7 _ Ss write the word in thier copybooks ....
