>> Poetry has always been a way to express feelings of joy, sorrow, outrage, humor, in tears, in rage, in sonnet and hope.
>> The Harlem Renaissance of the 20th century symbolized a turning point in the tradition of Black poetry at the time. It was here and in this milieu that the first collections of Black American poetry came into being.
>> In the decades immediately following World War 1, huge numbers of African Americans migrated to the industrial North from the economically depressed and agrarian South. In cities such as Chicago, DC and New York City, the recently migrated sought and found (to some degree) new opportunities, both economic and artistic.

*James Weldon Johnson: The Temptress, Prayer at Sunrise, The Word of an Engineer.
