Personally I kind of mix using both spellings
But in my opinion I find it crucial to learn the British spelling first then the American one and finally give the learner a chance to choose his/her own way of writing

Actually, I use what comes in my mind at the moment of writing
but you know I found these differences useful in college
if the doctors corrected my spelling I told them that I follow the American or British depending on the mistake LooL
