Advance Grammar for Advance Students

I would talk about a kind of grammar that is commonly used among people, newspaper and magazine. Hence, everyone has to know this kind of grammar in order to understand and use the English language. However, a person how wants to learn it should have studied the adverb clauses.

Reducing Adverb Clauses
This is our subject

First, let's start with an example which explains the situation.

See this sentences below

1. Wanting to do my duties, I stayed at home.
2. Having visited Riyadh before, I did not go there with my friends.
3. Able to use computer, I found a job.

Some of you guys may have studied or known this kind of strictures using in these sentences. Others might have seen these sentences before but they have no idea how to do them. These sentences are confusing for someone who have not studied advance grammar before. They can be more confusing if they use in long paragraphs with academic words.

Now let's see what these are

First sentence

Wanting to do my duties, I stayed at home.

This sentence initially looks like this

Because I wanted to do my duties, I stayed at home.

Because readers don't want to read wordy sentence, writers reduce sentence to be like this one. Also, when people speak, they usually speak this way. Anyway let's see how we can reduce BECAUSE CLAUSES.

If we have a sentence that contains BECAUSE and we want to reduce it. first we have to look for the subjects of both clauses, if they are the same we can reduce it. Otherwise, we can reduce it. Then, we take the clause that contains the preposition and we omit it with the subject. Finally, we add –ING to the verb and rewrite the sentence again.

Example :

Back to our sentence

Because I wanted to do my duties, I stayed at home.

First, we take this clause

BECAUSE I wanted to do my duties

Then, we remove them

Wanted to do my duties

Finally, add – ING to the verb and rewrite the sentence

Wanting to do my duties, I stayed at home.

Now it is clear and understandable.

IMPORTANT EXCEPTION

If the sentence contains be verb (is, are, am, was were …etc)

We omit the be verbs and we don't add –ING to the verb if there any.

Example:
Our last sentence

Able to use computer, I found a job.

Initially it looks like this

Because I am able to use computer, I found a job.

First, we take out

BECAUSE I AM able to use computer

Then, we rewrite

Able to use computer, I found a job.

FINALLY

SINCE and AS are synonyms for BECAUSE. Therefore, we can use them instead of because and we can reduce them.

This is the smallest part of reducing adverb clauses and there are other parts, so I going to post it. depending in your responses, I will determine whether continue or not.
