I don't like to go against your point of view...but you are wrong! Students can be any age, not just over 16. you don't need to be at a university to be considered a student

A student is simply any person who is engaged in learning. This can be a 5 year old kindergarten student, or a 40 year old college/university student. It can also be a person learning a trade, such as an apprentice. Pupil, and schoolboy/girl/child, are synonyms for student. They have similar meanings

Its better to say" there were 20 students in my class

school children" should really only be used if you are looking at a group of kids and commenting on their age or what they are doing. For example: "I was driving to work when a group of
school children jumped out in the road
