the old man and the sea
The old man and the sea

The story of the old man and the sea is an epical story, which talks about the struggle between the old man and the catch of his life. Santiago, an old Cuban fisherman, has set out to sea for eighty-four days, and returned empty handed. The parents of his youngster assistant have forced the boy to leave the old man in order to fish in a prosperous boat. Nevertheless, the boy continued to taking care of the old man after his return every night.

He helped the old man tote his to gear to his hut, secured food for him, and discussed the latest developments in the American baseball, especially the trails of the old man’s hero. Santiago was confident that his unproductive streak will soon come to an end, and he planned to sail out further than usual the following day.

On the eighty-fifth day of his unlucky streak, Santiago does what he promised, and sailed his skiff for beyond the island’s coastal waters and ventured into the Gulf Stream. He prepared his lines and dropped them. At noon, he caught a big fish, which he knows was a marlin. The old man expertly hooked the fish, but he couldn’t pull it in. Instead, the fish begun to pull his boat.

Unable to tie the line fast to the boat for fear the fish would snap a taut line, the old man beard the strain of the line with his shoulders, back, and hands, ready to give slack if the fish made a run. The fish pulled the boat all through the day, through the night, through the following day and night. It swam steadily northwest until it got tired and swam east with current. Santiago endured constant pain from the fishing line. Whenever the fish lungs, leaps, or make a dash for freedom, the lines cut him badly. Although wounded and weary the old man felt a deep empathy and admiration for the marlin, his brother in the suffering, strength, and resolve.

On the third day the fish tried, and Santiago, sleep-deprived, aching, and nearly delirious, managed to pull the marlin in close enough to kill it with a harpoon. The marlin was the largest Santiago has ever seen. He lashed it to his boat, raised the small mast, and set sail for home. While Santiago was excited by the price that the marlin would bring him at the market, he was more concerned that the people who will eat the fish are unworthy of its greatness.

As Santiago sailed on with the fish, the marlin’s blood left a trail in the water and attracted sharks. Santiago was able to slay the first shark using the harpoon and during the struggle the old man lost the harpoon and a length of a valuable rope, which left him vulnerable to other shark attacks. The old man fought of the successive vicious predators as he could, stabbed them with a crude spear he made by lashing a knife to an oar, and even clubbed them with the boat’s tiller.

Although he killed several sharks, more and more appeared, and by the time night fallen, Santiago’s continued fight against the scavengers were useless. They devoured the marlin’s precious meat, leaving only the skeleton, head, and tail. Santiago chastised himself for going “out too far,” for sacrificing his great worthy opponent. He arrived home before daybreak, stumbled back to his hut, and slept very deeply.

The next morning, a crowd of amazed fishermen gathered around the skeleton carcass of the marlin, which was still lashed to the boat. Knowing nothing of the old man’s struggle, tourists at a near by café observed the remains of the giant marlin and mistook it for a shark. Manolin, the boy, who has been worried sick over the old man’s absence, was moved to tears when he found Santiago safe in his bed. The boy fetched the old man some coffee and the daily papers with the baseball scores, and watched him sleep. When the old man woke up, the two agreed to fish together once more as a partners. The old man returned to sleep and dreamt his usual dream of lions playing on the white beaches of Africa
